Curious, they seem to be running a theme of Earth re-creations over at CBS-D. In the last 4 weeks we’ve had the chicago mobs, the nazi’s and now the romans. Fascinating…

Yep, Trek taught me the value of restraint.

The woven-in thread of satire on the power of the state to use media manipulation - the biased newsreel, the canned appluase in the arena - is also cool. It’s the kind of “message show” there isn’t nearly enough of in today’s TV, where such media manipulation is still far from banished.

I think it was Jeff Bond who said he felt this was the Best of the “Earth re-creations” (as Doug L. calls them) episodes. I’m going to second that motion. This one’s well played.

Whenever I go to Las Vegas and visit (or even just drive past) Caesar’s Palace, I always remember this episode.

Love this episode, it features one of the slimiest, pompous villains ever in Trek. I love to hate that guy!

I know that there wil be endless bickering back and forth about the implications of the closing lines (from both camps), but I STILL get chills down my spine when Uhura explains about the “Son” and not the “sun.”

It immediately reminds me of a Trek story idea mentioned in Inside Star Trek: The Real Story, by Herb Solow and Robert Justman.
On page 125, from a copy of the first page of Gene Roddenberry’s very first series proposal for Star Trek:
“THE COMING. Alien people in an alien society, but something disturbingly familiar about the quiet dignity of one who is being condemned to crucifixion.”

Actor Logan Ramsey was married to “mama” in the movie “Throw Mama From the Train.” He was a good character actor. I remember seeing him in an episode of “Route 66.” A little bit of trivia to ponder as we wander yonder.

While not being religious at all, I’m also not the least bit offended by this line. It seems to me it speaks to who Uhura is on some level… I never felt like I was being hit over the head with it. It’s a great ep. and an obvious cultural parallel played with a twist.

Good grief.

The whole pacifist movement being in reality the effects of the spreading faith in the Son was the pivot point of the whole episode, from the very beginning. I suppose every time the “Son Worshipers” (heard as Sun) it pulled you out? That was for the whole show then.

The writers or network wouldnt have the guts to put the line about “the son” in a trek episode nowadays. Strange that a Judeo Christian reference is made in positive light in what is now considered the very secular universe of Trek. Also odd given Roddenberrys beliefs.
Im glad its in though.
(Opens up a whole can o’worms philosophically in that universe
